NYCFL Multi-Family Group Therapy

Why Is Multi-Family Group Therapy Important?

Multi Family Group Therapy allows a family to join together with a small intimate support group of families of adolescents or young adults who are facing very similar challenges. Using long-standing principles of family systems theory and practice, our specialized family therapists, each with a master’s degree in Marriage Family Counseling or Social Work, will help to facilitate a discussion in which parents and their offspring can engage in the topics that are most often vexing to them when they try to tackle it on their own.  These group sessions are led by several therapists and stand at the crux of our treatment at New York Center for Living.

Shared topics examine family boundaries, curfews, privileges, commitment to treatment, and readiness for independence (camps, colleges. Study abroad).

Most importantly, it is in our multifamily groups that you come to understand that you are not alone. You no longer have to “pretend” all is well as you might when in the “outside” community. By bringing your authentic selves to the group, you truly understand and gain acceptance and belonging.

MFGT for is a powerful approach to help adolescent clients recover successfully. Our adolescent clients’ families are involved in therapy because adolescence is a vulnerable time in our lives.

In adolescence, we begin to gain a sense of independence and personal responsibility. Still, we are not yet fully grown enough to be considered an adult. There is still a need for the family to care for and support the adolescent. Adults in addiction treatment are typically fully responsible for their recovery. However, adolescents typically still live under the care of parents or other legal family members.

Even when an adolescent is open to recovery and fully engages in therapy and other aspects of treatment, an unsupportive home environment increases the risk of relapse. Without informed support and encouragement from the entire family, adolescents in recovery are highly vulnerable.

At NYCFL, we emphasize the value and importance of family involvement in treatment. By including and addressing a client’s family dynamics with the family present, treatment takes on a more holistic approach. From there, adolescents and their families can take a strong step forward on the path to health, functionality, and lasting recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Multi-Family Group Therapy?

Strength and Resilience

By sharing the therapy process with others, we can learn important, useful skills to bring into our own family. Families can learn from each other about attitudes and behaviors that work and those that do not.

With the help of a trained therapist, families can work together to support each other in developing the strength and resilience needed to overcome the difficulty of addiction. This is an important part of moving forward on the recovery journey.

Combined Outcomes

MFGT uses a combination of techniques and practices from family therapy and group therapy. In this way, successful therapeutic outcomes are supported by multiple evidence-based approaches.

Compassionate Addiction Treatment at NYCFL

At NYFCL, we use a vast range of approaches to therapy. Client family involvement is just one part of an evidence-based, whole person approach to treating adolescent addiction. We firmly believe in compassionate support and non-judgment for both clients and their families.
