Evaluations & Assessments

Evidence based care

Summary:

This article explores what to expect from a mental health evaluation NYC based.

At NY Center for Living, we understand how difficult it can be to reach out for help for mental health disorders or substance use disorders. We also know that every individual who comes to our Midtown Manhattan facility struggles in a different way, some with myths about substance abuse holding them back, some with substance use disorder, others with mental health disorders, and still others with both.

To ensure that all of our clients receive the right level of care and the best possible therapies for long-term success, we offer a multidisciplinary evaluations and assessment process, setting up a personalized program for each client based on unique psychological and medical needs. This starts with a mental health evaluation NYC residents can trust to provide an accurate diagnosis, and expands to things like family integration and personal histories.

What Makes Our Evaluation Process Unique?

A proper mental health assessment must look beyond immediate symptoms. For instance, a client struggling with prescription drug abuse or alcohol use might be trying to cope with an undiagnosed anxiety disorder. Our evaluation process is structured to get the bigger picture, and to help clients find treatment for all co-occurring disorders. As part of these evaluations, we use clinical diagnostic tools to screen for a wide array of mental health conditions alongside substance use disorder, including Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Borderline Personality traits.

Then we look at where a client stands developmentally. A teenager facing severe high school burnout requires an entirely different diagnostic program than a young professional experiencing new workplace stresses.

We don’t just use a single counselor either; we provide a multidisciplinary panel including licensed addiction therapists, family clinicians, and board-certified psychiatrists.

Our Assessment Timeline

Evidence based care

When you reach out to NY Center for Living, our admissions team will make sure your onboarding and evaluation process is as stress-free as possible. To do that, we break the evaluations and assessments into three distinct parts:

1. The Clinical Intake Interview

During this initial session, new clients meet one-on-one with an admissions clinician in a private, confidential setting. This is where we discuss personal history with substance use, current emotional well-being, and any previous treatment experiences. This step is there to help us listen to your story and identify your immediate goals.

When you first reach out to our admissions team we will start by collecting some information which we can do over the phone, online, or in person. This is a critical first step and it's important to be honest. Our caring team is here to help and there is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed.

2. Psychiatric & Medical Review

Part of our mental health evaluation NYC based is an assessment of psychological stability, figuring out whether clients have underlying mental health disorders for which they need new or different treatment. Some clients need treatment exclusively for mental health disorders while others might need treatment for mental health and substance use disorders at the same time.

Our board-certified medical and psychiatric team will handle a detailed evaluation to assess individual physiological stability and mental health. This part of the assessment helps identify and manage things like acute withdrawal symptoms. It can also help a multi-disciplinary team establish medication management services where necessary.

3. Systemic Family Assessment

Because substance use and mental health conditions impact the entire household, we include a dedicated family screening.

For teenagers who are participating in our team program, this family integration often takes the form of family education sessions and other support structures. For young adults and adults over the age of 18, clients have a choice as to which family members or even close friends they want to incorporate into this part of the assessment and treatment plan.

This is where family members can meet with our clinicians. The aim is to help parents, spouses, or designated loved ones understand the broader home dynamic, map out communication patterns, and identify how to support someone in recovery. This is especially important in our teen programs.

Your Individualized Care Plan

Within 24 to 48 hours of completing your evaluations, our clinical team will build a customized treatment plan that ensures you are enrolled in the right level of care, such as our:

  • Full-time Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • Flexible evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  • Standard outpatient counseling

We also curate the evidence-based modalities integrated into your treatment plan such as:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Finally, we create family programming with integration for weekly Multi-Family Skills Groups or monthly Family Night seminars as appropriate.

Uncompromising Privacy

At NY Center for Living, we understand how important it is to maintain privacy especially when first reaching out for an assessment or evaluation. Our initial evaluations and assessments are fully governed by strict federal and state privacy laws so any information including your personal history remains completely confidential.

We maintain proper HIPAA compliance meaning all of your protected health information remains within our clinical team unless you give explicit, written consent. Because we specialize in substance use disorder treatment, we also apply an extra layer of federal confidentiality so none of your information is disclosed to employers, schools, or other outside individuals.

How We Protect Your Privacy During Onboarding

During the onboarding process, all interviews, family screenings, and other assessments are conducted in secure, private offices at our Midtown Manhattan facility. You retain complete control over who gets involved in your level of care meaning as the client you have control over which family members may or may not be involved in the process. You also have the authority to revoke any authorization you have previously made at any time.

While you are at our facility, all diagnostic data collected remains highly encrypted and it only gets provided to specific clinicians who are part of your multidisciplinary team. Once you leave our facility all of that information remains just as private and secure.
