Young Adult Outpatient
Comprehensive treatment programs for young adults are available at the New York Center for Living. We treat young adults and adolescents struggling with mental and behavioral health disorders. Substance abuse is common among young adults. Often, those who struggle with mental health disorders develop co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
This can complicate treatment for each issue. Fortunately, help is available at NYCFL. We tailor each program to suit the client’s unique needs. We offer an initial comprehensive assessment and ongoing development of client-therapist relationships.
Outpatient Program for Young Adults
Our Young Adult Outpatient Program (YAOP) is designed for 18 to 29-year-olds who struggle with mental health issues and co-occurring substance-related disorders. Our outpatient program (OP) is designed to suit the range of needs specific to this age group. Having left the teen years and entered adulthood, the 18-29 age bracket can be a time of markedly increased vulnerability. Pressures face this group related to education, vocation, emotional and behavioral health, and social life.
These pressures are already heavy. They get heavier if we also struggle with addiction or other mental and behavioral health issues. Such issues can stand in the way of living a healthy, joyful life. The New York Center for Living is here to help young adults build the strengths and skills necessary to help them through their struggles and thrive in this time of their lives.
Mental health and substance use disorders jeopardize normal healthy development. Neuroscientific research suggests that the brain is not yet fully developed until around the age of 25. This means that many of this age group are still developing. Living with addiction or another mental health disorder disrupts this development. There are changes in brain structure related to addiction and mental illness. These structural changes can lead to further health complications until one’s issues are resolved.
Our brains are neuroplastic. This means that its structure can be reshaped and rewired throughout our lives. It was once that the brain only continues to grow during childhood and adolescence. Now we know that brain plasticity remains possible at any stage of life. Still, the younger we are, the easier it is to reshape the brain. Young adults between 18 and 29 can optimize their brain health and function when provided with appropriate treatment.
Our mission here at the center is to help young adults find their path in life and equip them with the skills to follow it. Mental and behavioral health disorders can take over our lives. They can blind us to motivation, future planning, and determination. We understand that substance abuse can be particularly damaging to a person’s world outlook and self-image. We aim to restore in our clients a positive, compassionate self-image and a healthy outlook on life. This isn’t always easy, especially when we struggle with disorders that can make us feel lost and hopeless. Still, self-compassion and positivity can be cultivated when backed up by real-life skills and deep motivation.
Here at the center, we support clients with a comprehensive range of evidence-based therapies and other healing modalities. Throughout any given program, clients will experience:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family-based therapy and counseling
- Experiential therapies
- Medical support where necessary
At the New York Center for Living, the recovery journey is one of self-discovery. Each modality we use is based on strong scientific research and evidence. Every approach puts the client in the center-focus of their treatment program. In therapy and counseling, clients are supported and guided by our expert mental health professionals.

Safety and Support
We foster compassionate and attuned therapeutic relationships with our clients to give them the safety and holding space they need to heal. Safety is an essential ingredient in the healing process. Clients need to feel safe and secure in their bodies if they are going to recover. This sense of safety can be fostered when clients experience a compassionate, non-judgmental relationship with an attuned other.
We also foster a sense of safety in clients by offering expert-led peer group therapy. Sharing one’s experiences and stories with others who share similar circumstances can alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness that typically come with mental and behavioral health issues. Clients can come to the understanding that many others share their struggles. Many clients who participate in group therapy come to develop a strong sense of compassion for others and themselves.
We understand the importance of sober support for clients struggling with addictive disorders. It is possible to overcome addiction, but many obstacles can hinder real progress. Cravings, anxiety, and many other short and long-term withdrawal symptoms can jeopardize a successful recovery. At NYCFL, we offer clients comprehensive and compassionate sober support. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the individual to take the reins on their healing journey. Still, that doesn’t mean that the entire journey needs to be done alone. Humans are community-based creatures. We are here to help and support each other.
Our Young Adult Outpatient Program (YAOP) involves individual, group, and family-based therapies to address a range of issues, including:
- Behavioral and addictive disorders
- Stress-related disorders
- Mood disorders
- Co-occurring SUD and Mood Disorders
- Educational/vocational uncertainty
In an outpatient program, clients attend appointments and group meetings throughout the week but do not live at the center. Outpatient programs can benefit clients who can manage to attend treatment while also keeping up with other life commitments.
Benefits of Outpatient Programs
Our outpatient treatment programs offer a range of benefits to our young adult clients. The combination of conventional therapy and alternative therapies lets us take a mind-body approach to healing. We take a holistic approach to help clients begin to heal in mind, body, and spirit. At NYCFL, clients are part of a strong, supportive community. There is a focus on developing a sense of purpose and building the life skills necessary to achieve it.
We understand that recovery is about far more than overcoming a specific set of symptoms. It is about the whole person, their relationship with themselves, and how they feel about the world around them.
The following are some of the benefits clients can reap at the center:
- Sense of community
- Sober support
- Life skill-building
- Greater self-awareness
- Sense of safety
- Compassionate, attuned therapeutic relationships
- Increased confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth

Many clients feel more comfortable sharing their stories in a group setting.
