Continuing Education Event

On Friday, February 7, 2025, NYCFL partnered with Newport Healthcare and MAIA Educational Resource Center to offer an in-person CE training focused on navigating confidentiality and disclosures when working with adolescent clients and their parents. Adolescents often grapple with identity, autonomy, and privacy, while guardians seek insights into their child’s well-being. Striking the right balance is essential for building trust and ensuring ethical, effective therapy.

The presentation featured NYCFL Clinical Director Ben Mushlin, Hannah Chesser, Director of Outpatient Services at Newport Academy, and Sharon Thomas, Founder of MAIA Educational Resource Center. The presenters explored legal and ethical considerations, clinical best practices, and educational implications. Ben provided guidance on confidentiality laws, informed consent, communication strategies, and documentation practices. Hannah discussed assessment, risk management, and cultural competency, offering case examples to illustrate key points. Sharon highlighted the intersection of academic support and clinical practice, noting similarities and differences in how each field handles parent communication.

The event drew professionals from diverse disciplines who actively participated with questions and reflections, fostering an atmosphere of mutual learning. After the presentation, attendees networked, laying the groundwork for future collaboration. We are grateful to contribute to a community dedicated to family healing and look forward to hosting more CE trainings on timely, relevant topics.
