We are here for you

At NY Center for Living, we provide anxiety and addiction treatment for different age groups.

Outpatient Care

For adolescents, we offer an outpatient program, one that provides up to 6 hours of group therapy sessions per week plus individual sessions, peer support group meetings, and support groups for parents or significant others. This more consolidated schedule still provides resources well beyond a traditional outpatient program but takes into account the demand for family obligations, homework, and school schedules.

At NY Center for Living, we provide therapy for teens with anxiety in NYC that incorporates parents into the process so that they better understand what the recovery process looks like for managing a mental health condition long-term. These individualized treatment programs include activities that help build a recovery community, like Improv, to improve communication skills and peer recovery support.

IOP

For young adults and adults, we offer our intensive outpatient programs, which provide nine hours of care per week. These hours incorporate individual and group therapies as well as partner and family support, wellness, and recovery activities. With this type of anxiety treatment NYC residents can still return home but receive substantially more support than they would with a traditional outpatient program.

Our IOP offers access to things like community dinners, case management, even a virtual program for those who are 25 and older.

Owing to the high correlation between mental health disorders and addiction, our IOPs can provide dual diagnosis programs for anxiety and addiction at the same time. This extends to offerings like medication management, providing medication to help control or reduce acute anxiety symptoms while also building the skills to better and manage overall health, set boundaries, and reduce triggers.

Anxiety Therapy NYC

Comprehensive Treatment in NYC

No matter the program level, NY Center for Living specialized in evidence-based therapies for anxiety treatment including:

  • DBT
  • CBT
  • Motivational Interviewing

Many of these can be most effective when they overlap.

DBT

Dialectical behavioral therapy focuses on accepting things like fear and anxiety and then using current skills to change that anxiety. Our therapists can provide clients with a toolkit, things that help them immediately change the hyper arousal that manifests with anxiety.

For example, a client who is considering going to a party might immediately struggle with high anxiety, shallow breathing, and racing thoughts. They might then splash cold water on their face to short-circuit their nervous system and force that heart rate to slow down. Doing so makes it possible to think more clearly and, from there, to fact-check.

That same client might think that going to that party will result in complete embarrassment and shame, but then fact-check that and realize that no one has ever laughed at them before, and no party has ever been shameful before.
Changing perspective like this with the help of a trained therapist can provide clients with the skills they need to move away from avoidance techniques or escapism.

Similarly, cognitive behavioral therapy can provide a place to recognize automatic negative thoughts, particularly those associated with anxiety. By learning to catch those thoughts when they happen, individuals can work with a therapist to consider how realistic those thoughts might be.

This is similar to the skill set example with DBT, checking the automatic negative thought that a party will be a complete disaster, and considering how realistic that automatic thought is or isn’t. From there, cognitive behavioral therapy can provide a resource for changing automatic negative thoughts into positive ones that are more heavily grounded in reality.

This can empower clients participating in anxiety therapy NYC based to tackle their anxieties in healthier ways using tools like worry time techniques. With this cognitive behavioral therapy technique, clients can learn to set aside the worries that might eat up the majority of their day and only tackle them during a specific, allotted time frame.

Other tools can include the cognitive behavioral therapy worry tree, taking concerns and fleshing them out to see what action can or cannot be taken, and therefore what level of anxiety should or should not be maintained.

Motivational interviewing has long been used as a form of adjunct therapy, meaning it’s used in conjunction with things like cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety treatment NYC based.
With motivational interviewing, the goal is to help our clients get over any “humps” or ambivalence they might face about confronting their anxiety and overcoming it. This is often used when clients want to get better; they want to overcome their anxiety, but they are afraid of how uncomfortable it might be, especially if participating in things like exposure therapy.
Our trained clinicians will use open-ended questions, reflective listening, and things like affirmations or summaries to help address these avoidance behaviors.
For example, a therapist working with a client who is struggling to overcome social anxiety points out that avoiding social outings entirely could avoid an uncomfortable feeling but also does nothing to help that individual overcome their feelings of loneliness which is a bigger issue for them.
Motivational interviewing can be highly effective as a form of anxiety treatment NYC based by helping clients to increase their engagement, improve their autonomy, and reduce the natural reflex to “fix” things.

Feel like yourself again.

Let's get there together.
