What to Expect with Our Personality Disorder Treatment

When you reach out to the NY Center for Living for personality disorder treatment in NYC, you’ll start with an evaluation. This process is handled by our admissions team, and it’s there to help ensure you receive the right level of care, whether that’s at our facility or another.

We specialize in flexible outpatient programs as a step-down for those who may have completed more intensive hospitalizations or are seeking additional support beyond weekly therapy sessions.

We divide our clients by age group to ensure that personality traits and emotional regulation is grounded in different maturity levels and developmental milestones, each with a range of evidence-based therapies.

Our Therapies

Understanding the therapy

As part of our personality disorder treatment, NYC residents can expect a range of different therapies. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the gold standard for personality disorders. At our treatment center, therapists and other clinicians provide individual and group therapy sessions focused on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

As part of our programs, we also incorporate group skill-building sessions where parents and clients alike can learn and practice critical DBT skills in real time.

Many clients might also participate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This helps identify deep-seated, maladaptive core beliefs, restructuring how individuals perceive themselves and interact with the world.

For some of our clients, we provide psychodynamic & integrative therapy which addresses root emotional patterns, helping clients build self-awareness and construct healthier relational boundaries. We add things like improv groups to our teenage outpatient programs to build social, emotional regulation, and communication skills.

Psychiatric Evaluation & Medication Management

When clients first reach out to our team for support, we provide an initial psychiatric evaluation by board-certified psychiatrists, followed by regular medical check-ins with the same psychiatrists. These regular medical check-ins are there to help manage co-occurring symptoms like severe anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances.

Family Integration

Personality disorders often have a genetic component, so it’s very likely that people and aspects to the living environment can contribute to triggers. That is why we have mandatory family programs and parent support tracks to ensure loved ones are equipped with the exact same dialectical skills being taught to our clients.

Aftercare & Alumni Networks

We know that managing a personality disorder doesn’t stop after a month or two of care. It is a long-term commitment to managing symptoms and identifying triggers, replacing maladaptive behaviors with healthier coping strategies.

That is why we offer continuous, long-term case management and peer connection to maintain long-term behavioral consistency and emotional growth.

What to Expect for Different Ages

Because personality traits and emotional regulation mature over time, we carefully tailor expectations, peer groups, and clinical goals to match these varying developmental milestones. That is part of the reason our admin team will make sure that each client is matched with the right type of outpatient program for their age group.

Adolescents and Teenagers

Our teenage outpatient program has a lot of parent involvement. Here, families can expect intensive integration to help repair household communication, provide education on different mental health disorders and their symptoms, and establish stable boundaries.

As a more traditional outpatient program, this meets for a few hours each week with a focus on group and family therapy sessions, helping to build distressed tolerance and safety. Our teenage clients learn to navigate overwhelming emotions, impulsivity, and identity confusion without turning to self-destructive coping mechanisms.

College Students

Our young adult intensive outpatient program helps balance academic pressure and mental wellness. Here we offer group therapy sessions that provide a safe space to process things like social anxiety, rejection, or performance stress among peers who face similar challenges.

This meets for between six and nine hours each week with a combination of individual and group therapy sessions where clients build strategies for managing high-stress academic and social environments independently. Therapists help students build consistent daily routines and navigate the complex interpersonal dynamics of campus life.

Young Professionals

Our adult program for young professionals focuses more on building a functional work-life balance. Here clients learn to manage perfectionism, authority dynamics, and professional stress while maintaining their career trajectory.

We offer virtual, highly discreet care focused on workplace accountability and long-term relational stability. Treatment targets emotional patterns that may interfere with career growth or romantic relationships.

How Our Amenities Impact Personality Disorder Recovery

Managing a personality disorder requires calming an overactive nervous system and practicing real-world social skills. At NY Center for Living we provide specific holistic offerings to support this stability.

Our programs center on mindfulness and emotional regulation spaces as well as structured community building. With our dedicated holistic tracking clients can practice distress tolerance skills in a calm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment. To help this and other aspects of treatment, we center our plans on collaborative group therapy, minimizing the intense feelings of isolation or abandonment that often trigger emotional crises.

As an outpatient facility, our programs are designed to work as part of a continuum of care:

  • Clients recently completing a residential program can participate in our outpatient options to help bridge the gap back into real world living
  • Clients who need more than weekly therapy sessions can manage chronic relationship turbulence or emotional volatility with the support our programs provide
  • Clients struggling with an underlying personality disorder complicated by things like tech addiction, eating disorders, or substance use can receive continued accountability and care
