How to Break Tech Addiction

Summary:

This article reviews how our facility breaks tech addiction and why families would benefit from traveling to NY Center for Living.

NY Center for Living provides clients with a central, Midtown Manhattan location where young adults and adults can participate in intensive outpatient programs and adolescents can participate in flexible outpatient programs. These are all designed from the standpoint of our nonprofit model and encourage teens, young adults, and their families to sustain their sobriety through structured programs, support groups, and peer support.

How to Break Tech Addiction

Those who are struggling with addiction to technology, something that has risen across teen and young adults demographics in particular, can find help not just for addiction but for underlying mental health disorders at our facility while also building a recovery community.

Breaking a tech addiction involves structured behavioral therapies that help rewrite daily routines, something that our clinical team can provide.

Digital Audits

When you reach out to our facility about yourself or a loved one struggling with tech addiction, our team will go through an initial assessment and once your recommended program has been started, our clinical team will help you start your digital audit.

This is an essential part of the recovery process because it helps log exact screen time hours and app categories, and provides an opportunity to explore the triggers that might prompt compulsive checking, things like loneliness, stress, or boredom.

With this information in mind our team can work with clients to separate when tech use is functional, particularly when it’s used for school or work, or even things like paying bills or finding a restaurant for dinner versus screen time used as a form of escape like gaming or infinite scrolling.

What to Expect from Tech Addiction Treatment

When you reach out to our staff, the initial assessment is where your recovery begins but it’s not where it ends. Our programs provide flexible outpatient options that can be scheduled around other personal or professional obligations. Our teen programs for example might meet several hours per week so as to not compromise academic requirements whereas our young adult programs for college-aged clients or working professionals might have more flexible options during the week to accommodate work.

No matter the schedule, the individual and group therapy sessions will all be centered on what each client needs most to create sustainable tech use, identify triggers, and overcome them with healthy coping skills.

Create Friction and Physical Barriers

Once an initial audit has been completed, our team will work with each client in a slightly different way, based on individual needs and any underlying triggers. For example, someone who might struggle with tech addiction to overcome feelings of loneliness might work with our clinical team through cognitive behavioral therapy.

This program typically lasts between 12 and 20 weeks and helps reframe automatic negative thoughts that might trigger things such as endless scrolling so that clients can utilize healthier coping skills and change those thoughts so their frequency diminishes over time.

Other clients might need physical barriers like website blockers or not allowing tech devices at the table or in the bedroom or other physical areas. This is where a lot of our family involvement takes place.

Family Involvement

Families play a critical role in helping teens and young adults overcome addiction whether it’s to drugs or technology. Families also play a critical role in helping those struggling with social media addiction to maintain their sobriety with the right amount of support at home. In order to facilitate this, we emphasize comprehensive family integration so that every client is supported the way they should be.

Family members participate actively in the recovery process starting with things like dedicated family therapy sessions and extending to specialized education groups. These sessions and educational groups ensure that family members like parents and siblings know how they can best support their loved one, understand the most effective communication tools, or how to improve family dynamics.

Reframing

As mentioned, there are many reasons why clients struggle with tech addiction and working with our outpatient programs to find those reasons is a critical part of the recovery process. Healing from a tech addiction might mean gradually tapering, limiting communication to specific Windows during the day like only checking social media at 9:00 a.m. and then again at 6:00 p.m. or leaving physical devices untouched for the first 90 minutes after getting up.

But more important than that is the use of our DBT or CBT combined with holistic therapies to help clients reframe their cognitive associations, scheduling offline activities during times when they might be at high risk of triggers, or using physical objects instead of apps like a physical alarm clock or a paper notebook.

How Our Teen & Youth Social Programs Help

If you want to know how to break tech addiction, especially as a teen or young adult, our team can walk you through what to expect.

We stand out among similar recovery centers because of the teen and young adult programs that we offer. These adolescent and young adult outpatient programs support young people who are trying to navigate maintaining a sober lifestyle by providing vibrant teen and youth social programs that make recovery engaging and relatable.

We know that a big part of success in recovery, especially at a young age, is working with people who have gone through similar situations and in particular peers who have gone through similar situations. That is why we offer peer support groups where clients get connected to people of similar ages who know what it is like to struggle with a balance of social pressure, family ties, tech use in daily life, independence, academic requirements, starting a new career, and even transitioning to a new phase in life.

Through structured peer groups, recreational outings, and sober social events, clients connect with a community of like-minded peers who share similar goals. These programs offer a safe, substance-free space where our younger clients can rediscover joy, build meaningful friendships, and develop the social confidence needed to thrive.
