Comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program in NYC
At NY Center for Living, we understand that recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each person’s path to wellness is unique, shaped by personal history, environment, and individual strengths. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Midtown Manhattan offers a structured, evidence-based treatment option designed for individuals who require more support than traditional outpatient care can provide—but who do not necessitate full-time residential treatment.
At the NY Center for Living, our IOP includes:
- Up to nine hours of group therapy per week
- Individual therapy sessions
- Parent and significant other support groups
- Peer recovery
This structured approach enables clients to engage deeply in the recovery process, developing the skills, self-awareness, and community connections essential for long-term wellness.
Who We Help
How IOP Differs from Outpatient Treatment
While both our IOP and outpatient treatment programs allow clients to live at home and remain active in their daily lives, the intensity, structure, and frequency of care distinguish the two.
Level of Structure
Our IOP provides more therapeutic contact and accountability than traditional outpatient programs. Clients attend multiple group sessions each week—up to nine hours total—supplemented by individual therapy and family support. This increased structure helps stabilize early recovery, establish healthy routines, and reduce the risk of relapse. Standard outpatient treatment typically involves fewer weekly therapy hours, focusing on maintenance, relapse prevention, and continued growth for those who have achieved greater stability.
Continuity of Care
Our IOP is often a step-down level of care for individuals who are transitioning out of residential or partial hospitalization programs. It can also serve as a step-up option for those who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy provides.
Reintegration Therapy
Our IOP focuses on relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and stress management, enabling participants to strengthen their recovery while balancing their personal lives and commitments as well as returning to their normal lives.
Family Involement
Family involvement is essential in recovery. Our therapists work closely with parents to help them understand the recovery process, set healthy boundaries, and support their child’s progress with empathy and consistency.
Benefits
Who Can Benefit from the IOP at NY Center for Living
Our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for individuals who are motivated to recover but require a more structured and supportive environment than weekly outpatient sessions can provide. We serve both adolescents and adults, with separate tracks and age-appropriate programming.
Young Adults
Young adults face unique pressures—from academic expectations to social influences—that can complicate recovery. We incorporate creative, experiential modalities—like improv-based therapy—to help adolescents express themselves, manage emotions, and improve interpersonal skills. We also host community dinners and peer activities that help young people build connection and confidence in a recovery-oriented community.
Adults (25+)
For adults and professionals balancing recovery with work and family responsibilities, our Adult IOP offers flexibility and targeted support. We offer both in-person and hybrid IOP options, enabling clients to participate in treatment at a time and place that suits their schedules.

Therapies and Approaches in Our IOP
Our IOP integrates a range of evidence-based therapies that address the psychological, emotional, and behavioral aspects of recovery. Treatment is always individualized and collaborative, guided by our experienced clinical team.
Core therapeutic modalities include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Helps clients identify and change thought patterns that contribute to substance use and negative emotions.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – Teaches mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) – Encourages clients to explore their own reasons for change and build motivation for recovery.
- Exposure Therapy – Helps clients confront triggers and fears safely, reducing avoidance behaviors and building resilience.
Each client’s treatment plan also incorporates wellness and recovery activities, such as mindfulness, self-care practices, and community-based support.

Building a Lifelong Recovery Community
Recovery doesn’t end when treatment does. At the NY Center for Living, we believe lasting change happens within community. These ongoing connections help clients stay engaged, supported, and inspired as they move forward in recovery. That’s why our IOP emphasizes connection, accountability, and ongoing support through:
